Finally – free tool for Oracle Data Modeling

Thos who know me know that I am not only e DBA, but also a developer (DBA-Village, PLATO, …). I have always been looking for a tool for data modeling, ERD creation, DDL generation etc… My additional wishes were that is should be good, and free. You can imagine how glad I am that now Oracle himself releases such a tool, that until now, fulfills all my wishes.

This weekend the Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeling tool has been released in an early adopter version. So it isn’t production yet, but I have been working with it already for several hours without any bug or problem. So it really is stable. Also it is easy to use and all basic functionality for data modeling is clear. Of course the tool does much more than what I need, but it is easy to separate the basic things from the rest and only use basic functionality.

Check it out on Oracle Technology Network.

Just one remark. It is written in java, and you know, java means memory. Today I had a lot of applications open on my pc and the modeling tool didn’t start. After invetigating a little in a dos box, I could obtain the error: Error occurred during initialization of VM. Could not reserve enough space for object heap. After closing some things like outlook and firefox, it started without any problem. I hope they’ll ever find a solution for the java memory greediness.

Are you positive that it is free?

You are right. I realized this after I wrote my post. There were rumours indeed on Openworld about a license for this product. I don’t think is has been decided already wheter it will be free or not.
Anyway, the current version (early adopter) is free to use, I didn’t find the product in the latest Oracle Pricelist, nor anything on the site about licenses. And maybe my personal limited private use for my tiny little data models will eventually fit in some kind of free developer license… lets hope.

I just tried it out, the tool is great. Finally one where you can extract the Model into DDL statements or import DDL statements into a model. And the functionallity to extract the model directly from the database… absolutely nice! ;) Hopefully they still deliver it as free, I guess that there will be many DB developer interested into this!

Well not long I guess, I always used Microsoft Visio for it. But how long did you search for a tool to create a Data Model and export the DDL statements or vice versa and also for one which is free? I did it now for around 4 year and then I found this blog entry: Finally – free tool for Oracle Data Modeling [...]
